TD42 Turbo Upgrade – Spartan STS-50 Performance Test
This week, we had the opportunity to test a monster Nissan Patrol running a TD42 engine, making it the perfect candidate for a TD42 turbo upgrade. After the owner’s old turbo failed, we installed our STS-50 HT18 turbocharger with an IWG-75 controlling the boost. These units are a direct fit to your exhaust manifold, dump pipe, and intercooler piping; however, the air inlet pipe requires minor modification. The kit includes oil feed and drain lines for an easy installation.
⚡ Testing the TD42 Turbo Upgrade – Dyno Performance
Equipped with a full 3-inch exhaust system, a welded end tank intercooler, and an HPD Billet Airbox lid, the Patrol was ready for testing. Using a 14 PSI wastegate spring and stock fueling, we ran the engine on the dyno, producing 136 kW and 446 Nm at the hubs. Peak boost was achieved at 2300 RPM, with AFRs sitting at 21:1. The factory intercooler heat-soaked after 2–3 runs, indicating a larger intercooler will maximize performance.
With proper fuel pump recalibration and boost adjusted to 22–24 PSI, we expect significant gains. This TD42 turbo upgrade demonstrates excellent spool, reliability, and performance potential for Nissan Patrol owners.
